How international is Barcelona?
Barcelona is a highly international city, with almost 30% of the permanent resident population coming from abroad.
Pleasantly fascinated by the great variety of nationalities among the resident population, I decided to look into it a bit more in detail. To uncover some of the macro dimensions, I broke down the question above into several related questions:
How has the population of Barcelona changed in the past few years?
Which are the most international and least international neighbourhoods in Barcelona?
Which are the largest foreign minorities in Barcelona by nationality?
Which are the largest foreign minorities in Barcelona by country of origin?
Where do Barcelona’s tourists mostly come from?
Distinguishing between nationality and place of birth helps better understand which are the largest minorities in the city according to their provenience. The analysis includes data on tourists’ countries of origin.
KEY TAKEAWAYS:
- El Barri Gotic is the most international neighbourhood in Barcelona with almost 70% of its residents born abroad
- Canyelles is the least international neighbourhood in Barcelona with about 11% of its residents born abroad
- Italians are the largest minority in Barcelona when considering nationality
- Argentinians are the largest minority in Barcelona when considering country of birth (provenience)
- Barcelona received tourists from more than 123 countries in 2022
- France, the UK, the US, Italy and Germany account for more than 50% of the total
